AVEBURY
STONE CIRCLES
One of the largest and most
impressive of the ritual 'Henge' monuments in Britain, Avebury
Stone Circles are situated about 6m west of Marlborough.
About a mile to the south
is SILBURY HILL - covering over 5 acres this is the largest
man made mound in Europe - the purpose of which has yet
to be clarified.
Overlooking it on a hilltop
is West Kennett Long Barrow - 100m long and over 2.4 m high
this is Europe's only open burial chamber.

THE RIDGEWAY
PATH
Get away from the hustle and bustle of
life and take a walk along the Ridgeway Path - Britain's
oldest road. At 85 miles in length the Ridgeway Path follows
the ancient chalk ridge route used by prehistoric man from
Marlborough in Wiltshire to Dunstable in Hertfordshire.
It is well signposted and most of the paths
can be walked, cycled or ridden with care being undemanding
with easy gradients.
The Ridgeway passes BARBURY CASTLE - the
Iron Age hill fort which commands the head of the valley
of the River Og which provided one of the main approaches
into Wessex from the north.

CROFTON BEAM
ENGINES
Built in 1807 to provide water to the summit
of the Avon and Kennett Canal, Crofton Pumping Station houses
two of the oldest working beam engines - one of which is
the oldest working beam engine in the world.
From Marlborough take the A346 to Burbage
& follow the brown signs for 'Beam Engines'

greatest prehistoric archaeological monument known throughout
the world.
